In the field of turbomachinery, most gradient-based optimizations using adjoints focus on aerodynamic cost functions and constraints. As a result, the optimized shape may be aerodynamically optimal but fails to fulfill structural requirements. Thus, there is a need to include structural constraints within the adjoint optimization process. Towards this end, algorithmic differentiation (AD) is used to differentiate the structural analysis within the framework of a CAD-based adjoint multidisciplinary optimization for turbomachinery components.
