Early Stage Researcher 15 at Volkswagen

As an Early Stage Researcher placed at Volkswagen Group Research my research objective is to provide industrial input to the development of the IODA modules for mesh and geometry deformation, necessary for adjoint-based shape optimisation.

The modules developed in IODA have been barely used in strictly-constrained industrial cases, the complexity of which can always be a challenge. Therefore, a test case suite was provided initially, so that such an environment is taken into account during the method development. In addition,  an optimisation framework was developed, tailored to the VW workflow, which allows the modular integration of the IODA morphing tools. This enabled the evaluation of many of the developed methods of the IODA project which eventually led to a comparative analysis. Identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the morphing tools is a key aspect for their further adaptation to an industrial enviroment and their establishment in automotive part design.

In conclusion, this research project contributed to the developed methods of the IODA project by taking them one step further from their conception and validation in academic cases to their full industrialisation
